BEILSTEIN S TEST. A test to detect halogens m organic compounds. Copper gauze is heated in a flame until the flame shows no green color if the addition of an organic compound produces a green flame, a halogen is present. [Pg.191]

Halogens may also be detected by Beilstein s test—a piece of pure copper oxide, held by means of a platinum wire around it, is heated in a Bunsen flame until it ceases to colour the flame green. It is then allowed to cool, and a little of the compound is placed on it. If, on heating again, there appears a bright green flame accompanied by a blue zone round the oxide (due to the volatilisation of copper halide), the presence of a halogen is indicated. [Pg.445]

The presence of halogens may be recognised very quickly and conveniently by Beilstein s test A piece of cupric oxide the size of a lentil, or a small rod of the oxide cm. long, is wrapped around with a thin platinum wire, the other end of which is fused to a glass handle, and heated in the Bunsen flame until it becomes... [Pg.74]

In Beilstein s test, which provides a simple means of detecting halogens, a minute quantity of the test material is placed on a copper wire (initially heated in a nonluminous bunsen flame until the flame appears colorless and then cooled) and heated in the outer part of the flame. Carbon bums first with a luminous flame. A subsequent green to blue-green color, produced by volatilized copper halide, indicates halogen (chlorine, bromine, iodine). [Pg.369]

Explain the chemical principles on which the Beilstein s test for detection of halogens is based. [Pg.189]
