Behaviour task selection

The influence of BDNF regulation of synaptic function on behaviour has still to be fully determined. Rats treated with antibodies to BDNF (icv) were signihcantly impaired in a spatial learning task (Mu et ah, 1999). Levels of BDNF expression in CAl were rapidly and selectively increased following contextual fear conditioning, a form of learning also dependent on the hippocampus (Hall et ah, 2000). 

If in instrumental conditioning a response is not followed by a punishment, but its absence, animals will increase this response in order to minimise punishment. In active avoidance tasks, for instance, animals have to show a distinct behavioural response in order to avoid a punishment. Typical examples would be shuttle-box experiments and jump-up avoidance. A shuttle box consists of two compartments that are connected by a sliding door. The punishment will be signalled by either a tone or a light stimulus (CS). Animals have to leave the compartment in which the CS was presented within a selected amoimt of time, after which the CS would be followed by a footshock. In the pole-jump test, the occurrence of the footshock will be signalled by a tone or hght stimulus as well. Animals can avoid the punishment if they jump onto a vertical wooden rod. 

NLLS or CNLS starts with the selection of the equivalent circuit, followed by the initial value estimation for all the model parameters. Estimation of the initial values is one of the most difficult tasks in the analysis of an equivalent circuit model. A good initial value estimation needs a sohd understanding of the element behaviours in the circuit. If the initial estimations are far from the real values , the optimum fit may not be found. An estimated value within a factor of ten of the true value is a good start for determining a model parameter [7],... 

The chemist got confronted with exciting new tasks as to synthesize organic molecules with structures specifically adapted for the binding of metal ions. Natural selection once more proved to be the guiding principle for the elucidation of a scientific problem. The unique biological behaviour now appears to be explainable in terms of physical properties such as complex stability and rates of ligand substitution. 

Imagine a series of transitions between phases of different symmetry, as shown in Fig. 6.2, for instance, with decreasing temperature. Our task is to select one of these transitions, find the temperature behaviour of the order parameter and other thermodynamic functions close to the phase transition [2].
