Beclomethasone dosage

In the 1980s, Machid and Nagai [41] evaluated spray dosage forms based on hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) for the delivery of beclomethasone to treat recurrent and multiple apthae. Previously a double-layered tablet of HPC and Carbopol 934P was introduced in the market for the treatment of apthous stomatitis [41]. 

The aerosol solution does not require shaking. Two actuations of the 40 meg strength should provide a dose comparable to 1 actuation of the 80 meg strength. The recommended dosage relative to CFC-based beclomethasone dipropionate (CFC-BDP) inhalation aerosols is lower because of differences in delivery characteristics between the products. 

A 38-year-old woman who had used inhaled beclo-methasone daily (dosage not stated) during the winter for the past 5 years for mild asthma, developed a perioral rash with numerous small pustules and papules. She stopped using beclomethasone and was treated with oral erythromycin and topical tretinoin. Her rash resolved within 4 weeks. One year later, she restarted beclomethasone and her rash reappeared after 2 weeks. There was no recurrence of her perioral dermatitis during subsequent treatment with monthly intramuscular injections of betamethasone. 

Comparisons with oral glucocorticoids A meta-analysis of 21 studies in which 810 asthmatic children were treated with oral prednisolone (8 trials) and/or beclomethasone dipropionate, dosage range 200-900 micrograms/day (12 trials) has been reported. Significant suppression of growth occurred with oral glucocorticoids but not with beclomethasone dipropionate (145).

Studies with beclomethasone suggest that HFA-MDI formulations produce smaller particles than CFC-MDI formulations, which may lead to a reduction in the dosage necessary to control asthma symptoms.
