Commercial acetaldehyde has the following typical specifications assay, 99% min color, water-white acidity, 0.5% max (acetic acid) specific gravity, 0.790 at 20°C bp, 20.8°C at 101.3 kPa (1 atm). It is shipped in steel dmms and tank cars bearing the ICC red label. In the Hquid state, it is noncorrosive to most metals however, acetaldehyde oxidizes readily, particularly in the vapor state, to acetic acid. Precautions to be observed in the handling of acetaldehyde have been pubHshed (103). [Pg.53]

Transition-metal-based Lewis acids such as molybdenum and tungsten nitro-syl complexes have been found to be active catalysts [49]. The ruthenium-based catalyst 50 (Figure 3.6) is very effective for cycloadditions with aldehyde- and ketone-bearing dienophiles but is ineffective for a,)S-unsaturated esters [50]. It can be handled without special precautions since it is stable in air, does not require dry solvents and does not cause polymerization of the substrates. Nitromethane was the most convenient organic solvent the reaction can also be carried out in water. [Pg.114]

In considering the possible use of diazoalkanes in synthetic applications, the prospective user must bear in mind that the handling of these compounds is very hazardous. They are highly toxic, and they are susceptible to undergoing violent explosions. Therefore, they must be handied with proper precautions and by properly informed laboratory personnel. [Pg.953]

Shipping containers may not need to bear labels with full description of the identity of the container s content (in order to deter thieves), but should nonetheless provide sufficient information on handling and storage conditions and precautions to ensure the product is properly handled at all times. [Pg.192]

When applying any radioactive technique, one must bear in mind that radioactive materials are hazardous and must be handled properly. Therefore, prior to application of any of the techniques outlined below, the user must be familiar with all the relevant safety precautions, and adequately follow these precautions. [Pg.425]
