Ilex paraguariensis var. genuina is an evergreen tree that grows to a height of 20 to 30 m unattended but under cultivation is kept at 4 to 6 m. The leaves are oval or elliptical, 3 to 20 cm in length, 2 to 9 cm in width, dark green in color. Flowers form in the leaf axils and at the base of the small branches. According to Chirikov [23J, the onset of chaos is associated with the overlap of neighboring nonlinear resonances. The overlap criterion, which bears the qualitative significance, uses the model of isolated resonances. Each resonance is characterized by its width, the maximum distance (in the action variable) from the elliptic fixed point The overlap means that the sum of the widths of two neighboring resonances is equal to the distance between two fixed points of these isolated resonances. C. tripsaci was described from Tripsacum dactyloides (L.) L. from the southeastern United States. Sclerotia are initially white, becoming brown or black at the distal end, nearly conical, 4-5 mm in diameter at the base. Stipes are whitish purple, bearing gray to grayish white capitula. Perithecia are elliptical, 390 X 153-187 pm. Asci are 145-175 X 2-3 pm, with ascospores of 130 pm. Conidia are hyaline, fusoid to lunulate, 17.4-37.7 X 2.0-8.7 pm (Fig. 1 v). Except for the size of the sclerotium, C. tripsaci is morphologically similar to C. gigantea. 

The elliptic functions bear important analogies with the ordinary trigonometrical functions. The latter may be regarded as special forms of the elliptic functions with a zero modulus, and there is a system of formulae connecting the elliptic functions to each other.
