Two commercial size plants for groundwater treatment based on liquid membrane technology in general, and the supported liquid membrane using hollow fibers in particular, were built and operated in Baltimore, U.S.A. Specifically, the purpose of the two plants is for hexavalent chromium cleanup. One plant went into commercial operation in March 1999 and the other approximately about a year later. The liquid membrane system in these two plants is able to reduce metal-ion concentration from 100-1000 ppm range to approximately 0.05 ppm and, meanwhile, produce a concentrated chromium solution, which is the spent strip solution, at approximately 20% Cr (VI). This concentration is suitable for sale for reuse. [Pg.3224]

Projected lifetimes of PEMFC stacks based on different membrane types are shown in Fig. 5. These results are based on early research at General Electric (GE) (LaConti et al. 1977). The FRR is found to increase by 7 times when the operating temperature is increased from 65 to 90°C (Preli 2005). [Pg.52]

Nutrients can be classified into three groups based on levels required in waste treatment systems. These are given in Table 9. The major nutrients can be identified from the generalized biomass formula (Ceo Hg2 O23 Ni2 P). The actual quantity needed depends on the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of the waste. The higher the BOD the greater the quantity of cells produced. The minor and trace nutrients are needed in small quantities and are given in terms of concentration because these are the levels needed in solution to force the small amount required inside the cell across the cell-wall membrane. [Pg.151]

The most important application of semi-permeable membranes is in separations based on reverse osmosis. These membranes generally have pores smaller than 1 nm. The pressure across the semi-permeable membranes for reverse osmosis is generally much larger than those for ultrafiltration, for example. This is because reverse osmosis is usually used for small molecules which have a much higher osmotic pressure, because of the higher number density, than the colloids separated in ultrafiltration. As a result reverse osmosis membranes have to be much more robust than ultrafiltration membranes. Since the focus of our discussion in this chapter will be on reverse osmosis based separations, we will describe these membranes in greater detail. [Pg.778]

The first Monte Carlo study of osmotic pressure was carried out by Panagiotopoulos et al. [16], and a much more detailed study was subsequently carried out using a modified method by Murad et al. [17]. The technique is based on a generalization of the Gibbs-ensemble Monte Carlo (GEMC) method applied to membrane equihbria. The Gibbs ensemble method has been described in detail in many recent reports so we will only summarize the extension of the method to membrane equilibria here [17]. In the case of two phases separated by semi-permeable membranes... [Pg.780]

Although the 3 - and 5 -polyphosphate derivatives mentioned above exhibit exquisite inhibitory potency these compounds are not cell permeable. To take advantage ofthepotency of such derivatives for studies with intact cells and tissues, there are two possibilities. One is chemically to protect the phosphate groups from exonucleotidases that also allows the compound to transit the membrane intact. The other is to provide a precursor molecule that is cell permeable and is then metabolized into an inhibitor by intracellular enzymes. The general term for such a compound is prodrug nucleotide precursors are also referred to as pronucleotides. Families of protected monophosphate derivatives were synthesized, based on (3-L- and 3-D-2, 5 -dd-3 -AMP, 3-L-2, 3 -dd-5 -AMP, and the acyclic 9-substituted adenines, PMEA and PMPA. Protective substituents were (i) -( -pivaloyl-2-thioethyl) ... [Pg.36]
