Barium perchlorate, decomposition

After the electrolysis has been finished, solid sodium perchlorate may be separated from the solution, but usually other salts of perchloric acid are the final products, which are more suitable for commercial use. Potassium perchlorate is prepared by double decomposition of sodium perchlorate solution with potassium ehloride. If ammonium chloride or sulphate is used for the conversion, ammonium perchlorate will be obtained. Similarly, a mutual reaction with barium chloride will result in barium perchlorate. [Pg.375]

Silver perchlorate, AgC104.—The monoxide dissolves in perchloric acid, forming the perchlorate. It is also produced by double decomposition from barium perchlorate and silver sulphate. The unstable, deliquescent salt melts at 486° C., and decomposes at higher temperatures. [Pg.310]

The nitrates are considerably endothermic in their decomposition and therefore deliver less heat than chlorates or perchlorates, but they can be used with less fear of accidental ignition. Barium nitrate is often selected for white-light mixtures. The barium oxide (BaO) product formed upon reaction is a good, broad-range molecular emitter in the vapor phase (the boiling point of BaO is ca. 2000°C), and condensed particles of BaO found in the cooler parts of the flame are also good emitters of incandescent light. [Pg.84]

The ammonium nitrate which is produced by above reaction is quite hygroscopic. Therefore if a composition which contains ammonium perchlorate comes in contact with another composition which contains potassium nitrate such as black powder, a wet layer of ammonium nitrate occurs between the two compositions and causes misfire. With barium nitrate this double decomposition does not occur, and a mixture of barium nitrate and ammonium perchlorate is allowed in the preparation of firework compositions. [Pg.96]
