Balling hydrometer

Use alcohol thermometers, stainless steel thermocouples and stainless steel ball hydrometers. [Pg.27]

Balling hydrometer. A device for determining the approximate percentage of sugar in solution at 60°F. [Pg.119]

The ground rye is first scalded with water of about 170° F. temperature. Then it is stirred, the ground malt added and the whole mash kept for about two hours at a temperature of approximately 150° F. Its sugar content should be about 22 to 25 per cent as indicated on the Balling hydrometer. [Pg.66]

Balling s saccharometer is used in Europe and is practically identical with the Brix hydrometer. [Pg.142]

Normally a stem or hydrometer is used to determine density. Hydrometers may be scaled in many different units. In the United States, grape juice and wine densities are usually measured in Brix or Balling degrees which are density units reflecting the weight per cent of sucrose in sucrose-water solutions. [Pg.292]

Balling Scale—This scale is used mainly in die brewing industry to estimate percent wort but also is used to indicate percent by weight of either dissolved solids or sugar liquors. Hydrometers are graduated in percent weight at 60°F or 17.5°C. [Pg.1528]

Balling s hydrometer, much used by English dyers is so graduated that sp. gr. = oaa i, the +... [Pg.398]

He next discusses the equilibrium of fish and how the entrainment of more or less air may compensate for changes in the density of water. This anticipates the submarine. The basis for the hydrometer is also contained in the discussion of neutral equilibrium of bodies. The extreme sensitivity of a ball of wax impregnated with sand used by physicians to establish neutral equilibrium in the measurement of density is also described. [Pg.112]
