Back lash

FT-Raman spectroscopy using FTIR instmmentation solves another problem frequently encountered in conventional Raman spectrometers, which is the lack of sufficient frequency precision required to perform spectral subtractions. This poor precision arises from back-lash in the mechanical drive and fluctuations in the laboratory environment which causes changes in alignment. [Pg.228]

I sighed. No one ransacked anything. Raffaino Sciara read the letter on the desk and took a quick look at the book shelves. Would you care to prescribe a soothing unguent for the lash marks on my back and the bums under my toenails ... [Pg.25]

Her head fell back as I turned her over. Her eyes were partly open, half-moons of white lined with aching beautiiiil lashes. I felt fiantica% for a pulse. There was nothing No ... [Pg.102]

As the numbers of Mexican immigrants began to increase, especially in the border towns of the southwest, they were the object of close scrutiny by the townsfolk. Suspicious and often resentful of these newcomers, the townspeople humiliated, harassed, and abused them to make them feel as unwelcome as possible. When the Mexicans lashed back at their tormentors, their actions were often attributed to the influence of marihuana, which to many Americans symbolized the Mexican presence in America. [Pg.101]

In the particular reaction used as an illustration, there are one primary and two secondary isotope effects and a good deal of ancillary kinetic evidence to fall back on. Generally, however, the burden of uncertainty is much too great for a minute and not always a very precisely determined secondary isotope effect to bear. Small wonder then that many workers in the field have preferred to lash themselves firmly to the formal framework of isotope effect theory After a model for the transition state is assumed, bond lengths and angles can be altered, force constants increased and decreased ad libitum, until the experimental result is more or less comfortably accommodated in the Procrustean bed of theory. How much useful mechanistic information is derived by this procedure is open to question. [Pg.113]
