Axial slot, pressure

The core subassemblies are shown in Fig. 6. The core is comprised of 282 hexagonal channels that provide axial and lateral support, as well as channeling the coolant past the fuel. Nose pieces, attached to the lower end of these channels, locate and support the subassemblies by mounting into the lower grid. The channel wall is designed to withstand 40 psi differential pressure and requires a wall thickness of 0.139 in. Slotted channels permit this design by equalizing the pressure differential above the upper blanket. 

A similar study was carried out by Edwards and Shales [30, 31], but in their experiments they used a mixer with a rotor and stator in which the parallel rows of slots were replaced with staggered rows of hemispherical cavities, as described in Chapter 9. The 32 mm extruder with an axially split barrel for opening and screw removal after cooling was fed with 2 mm pellets of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) 50 wt% black and 50 wt% white. Screw speed was 50 rpm and the die pressure was 16 MPa. Photomicrographs of sections removed from the screw channel... 

In axial annular flow there is curvature across the flow streamlines, that is, curvature in the plane perpendicular to the flow direction x (see Figure 5.1.2). This is similar to the pressure hole error for flow over a parallel slot, eq.6.3.14. Both geometries measure the second normal stress difference. When a viscoelastic fluid flows down a tilted, open channel, the free surface bulges slightly as indicated in Figive 6.4.4. This curvature is across the streamlines of the flow thus, as with parallel pressure slot and axial annular flow, we expect the bulge to be proportional...
