This paper provides a framework for the application of Second Law based design methodology to separation systems. A relationship is derived for the available-energy destruction in a binary separation column as a function of the reflux ratio and the feed and product mass fractions. This derivation is limited to separations in which the entropy production is predominately due to mass transfers. 

How the tools are organized into a methodology for process evaluation via available energy will be illustrated in this paper with the help of a very simplified coal-fired boiler, often found in textbooks on thermodynamics. It will be used to demonstrate the calculation of available energy flows, losses and consumptions. 

In essence, they costed the consumption and loss of the steam s available energy in terms of the lost output of power. More recently Wepfer, Gaggioli and Obert (13) presented the methodology for economic design of piping and insulation on the basis of available energy costs determined by the methods described earlieT in the present article. 

Extensive treatments on the meaning and methodology of available energy have been presented in several other papers Tl-7). 

The investment cost, operating and maintenance costs, and energy costs for the application of control technologies to the wastewater of the coil coating industry have been analyzed. These costs were developed to reflect the practical application of technologies in this industry. A detailed presentation of the cost methodology and cost data is available in the literature.1-19... 

There are numerous types of instrumentation available for the measurement of XRF, but most of these are based either on wavelength dispersive methodology (typically referred to as WDX) or on the energy dispersive technique (typically known as EDX). For a detailed comparison of the two approaches for XRF measurement, the reader is referred to an excellent discussion by Jenkins [69]. 

Single crystals of free lipid A or LPS are as yet not available. Therefore, the most promising approach to obtain molecular models is to perform theoretical calculations. After the chemical structures of enterobacterial lipid A had been elucidated, this methodology was successfully applied with heptaacyl S. minnesota lipid A (220) and hexaacyl E. coli Re LPS (221). As an example, Fig. 13 shows the atomic model of the E. coli lipid A molecule, as calculated by Kastowsky et al. (221) using energy-minimization techniques. 

Another important limitation of current MD methods is that of the conservation of zero point energy (see Ref. [21] and references therein). In a many-atom system the total quantum mechanical zero point energy can be quite high, and, in classical mechanics, this energy is available to the system.
