When someone chooses an occupation or drifts into ajob, two processes are at work - individual and social. At the individual level the person has to consider a series of options or alternatives. Some of those options may suit his or her particular aptitudes, temperament, abilities, knowledge of the market, qualifications and so on, others may not. At the social level the basic values of society as well as the structural constraints of the availability of jobs, the demand for labour, the recruitment policies of firms and businesses and the nature of the labour market are important. Thus when someone enters an occupation this is the culmination of a process whereby the hopes and desires of an individual (the individual level) have to come to terms with the realities of the occupational market situation (the social level).
