Automatic mesh generation

The refined mesh given above was used in the axial direction the radial mesh used n = 3, y = 0.25,0.5,0.75. It was found possible to use the same mesh throughout in the t-domain, due to the freedom to vary the scaling factor a. This avoided heuristic searching for a new mesh for each new set of parameters. Automatic mesh generation was not felt to be worthwhile, in view of the extra costs involved and the relatively underdeveloped state of the art (24). 

Besides interactive meshing, commercially available mesh geneiators exist. The requirements of an FE mesh generator also depend on the application environment. The following requirements for automatic mesh generators, for both 2D and 3D models, should be met (Boender 1992) ... 

The most frequently used finite element forms for 2D are three- and four-sided elements and for 3D are tetrahedrons and hexahedrons. For automatic mesh generation, triangles and tetrahedrons are suitable element shapes, whereas hexahedrons provide better results in the analysis phase (Knothe and Wessels 1992).
