We shall discuss results of such intercomparisons for Australian Radiation Laboratory, ARL (Huntley and Nette, 1993) for the years 1971-1992. Every Australian radiotherapy centre participated in the intercomparison. There were sufficient TLD sets provided by the IAEA to enable at least one beam quality to be included from every centre. There were also two special TLD sets provided (together with special jigs) to provide a check on D q/D, measurements at two centres. The overall result was quite satisfactory. The IAEA have stated in correspondence with ARL relating to the TLD intercomparison program that ... [Pg.295]

A wide-ranging ground survey of Taranaki area was conducted by the Australian Radiation Laboratory (ARL) over the period 1984 to 1986. Field measurements employing thin sodium-iodide detectors and single-channel analysers were used to provide a qualitative indicator of plutonium (Cooper et al., 1985), and quantitative data were obtained by gamma-ray analyses of soil samples (Cooper et al., 1985 Bums et al.,... [Pg.512]

It is still unclear what kind of radiation sources can lead to asymmetric reactions. Jeremy Bailey from the Anglo-Australian Observatory in Epping, Australia, investigated which astronomical objects could be considered radiation sources (Bailey et al., 1998 Bailey, 2001). It was possible in laboratory experiments to generate a small enantiomeric excess of some amino acids by using circularly polarized UV light (Norden, 1977). This asymmetric photolysis involves photochemical decomposition of both d- and L- enantiomers, but at different rates, so the more stable form tends to survive. This process must be subject to autocatalytic multiplication. [Pg.251]
