Japanese studies toward an atomic bomb began first within the military. The director of the Aviation Technology Research Institute of the Imperial Japanese Army, Takeo Yasuda, a lieutenant general and an alert electrical engineer, conscientiously followed the international scientific literature that related to his field in the course of his reading in 1938 and 1939 he noticed and tracked the discovery of nuclear fission. I was about to undertake had I known Dr. Tsuzuki s background. I suppose it was concern about security that had discouraged Dr. Warren from providing that information. I did not know that it was Dr. Tsuzuki who had mobilized an immediate research program by Japanese doctors working with the survivors of the atomic bomb attacks. Shockley had worked during the war on radar and anti-submarine warfare. In July 1945, he was asked by the US War Department to prepare a report on the likely casualties if Japan were invaded. His report predicted millions of both Japanese and Allied casualties, and influenced the decision to use the atomic bomb. [Pg.133]
