The von Braun Reaction with Dihydroatisine.—Indian researchers37 have reported a study of the von Braun reaction of dihydroatisine (29) and a mass spectral analysis of the resulting product, the N-nitrile (93). Reduction of atisinium chloride (94) with sodium borohydride gave dihydroatisine (29). The reaction of the latter with cyanogen bromide in anhydrous ether at room temperature for 24 hours gave (93) [m.pt 265 °C] in a yield of 86%. Acid hydrolysis of (93) with 10% HC1 afforded compound (95). 

The structure of atisinium chloride as 5 was confirmed recently by a single-crystal X-ray analysis (SO). The absolute configuration of atisinium chloride was determined as 45, 5S, 8/ , 10/ , 12/ , and 155 by Hamilton s method and confirmed by examination of sensitive Friedel pairs. A recent X-ray crystallographic study of isoatisine confirmed the assigned structure 75. The absolute configuration was established as 45, 55, 8/ , 10/ , 12/ , 155, and 195 for isoatisine. Pelletier and Mody (87) have studied the behavior of ajaconine (88) in ionic and nonionic solvents with the aid of 13C-NMR spectroscopy. They established the structure of 7a-hydroxyisoatisine (82) and reported the 13C-NMR spectra of 80, 82, atisinium chloride (5), and ajaconium chloride (203). 

In the crystalline state, veatchine was shown to exhibit epimeric disorder, existing as a 60 40 mixture of the epimers (67a) and (67b), respectively. By analogy from the determination for atisinium chloride, the absolute configuration for veatchine must be 45, 55, 8R, 10/ , 13/ , 15/ , and 205/ .
