Assay Microorganisms

The assay microorganisms in Polytox are a blend of bacterial strains originally isolated from wastewater [48]. The Polytox kit (Microbiotest Inc., Nazareth, Belgium), specifically designed to assess the effect of toxic chemicals on biological waste treatment, is based on the reduction of respiratory activity of rehydrated cultures in the presence of toxicants. The commercially available kit is specihcally designed for testing wastewaters. Quantative results can be obtained in just 30 minutes. 

Enzymatic Determination and Microbial Assay. In these methods, only the desired amino acid is detected ia spite of the presence of other amino acids. No expensive tools are needed for these determiaations. The required nutrients for microorganisms and practical operations for the microbial assay of amino acids have been reviewed (134,135). 

MacroHdes are obtained by controUed submerged aerobic fermentations of soil microorganisms. Although species of Streptomjces have dominated, species of Saccharopoljspora Micromonospora and Streptoverticillium are also weU represented. New techniques such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) based assays may prove beneficial for discovering new stmctures (464).
