Ascorbate peroxidase redox properties

It is clear that participation of ascorbate in a number of functions at the plasma membrane is based essentially on the redox properties of the ascorbate/APR pair and its participation in the transplasma membrane electron transport, which has been widely associated with the control of cell growth (Crane et al., 1985). These molecules modulate animal cell proliferation and increase plant cell elongation. However, these effects appear to occur only when cells have been properly induced to grow. Besides the role of ascorbate in the organization of cell wall via interaction with peroxidases, the interchange between the two forms of ascorbate could support the idea that the antioxidant action of ascorbate and the stabilization at the cell surface are compatible events. [Pg.75]
