As a Form of Treatment

Many professionals have questioned the assumption that these medications are profoundly effective particularly in treating mental health problems and when medication is used as the sole method of treatment, core aspects of the disease and the resulting problems often go untreated (Gitlin, 1996). [Pg.13]

In using medication as a treatment modality, there are three courses of therapy that are usually identified acute, continuation, and maintenance (Gitlin, 1996). Acute treatment addresses the symptoms of an active problem or disorder such as taking lithium to reduce the active symptoms of mania. The continuation phase is designed to prevent relapse. The last course of therapy is maintenance. In the maintenance phase, prevention is emphasized, and medications are used as needed or as symptoms arise (acute treatment), or they can be given to prevent recurrences of the disorder (maintenance treatment). In maintenance treatment, a client is often encouraged to take ongoing doses of the medication to prevent a recurrence. [Pg.14]

Coercion masquerading as medical treatment is the bedrock of political medicine. Long before the Nazis rose to power, physician-eugenicists advocated killing certain ill or disabled persons as a form of treatment for both patient and society. What transforms coercion into therapy Physicians diagnosingxhc subject s condition a disease, declaring the intervention they impose on the vic-... [Pg.140]

Exercise physiologists work with athletes as well as patients who have been diagnosed with diabetes, heart disease, pulmonary disease, or other chronic disability or disease. Patients who have been diagnosed with one of these diseases are often prescribed exercise as a form of treatment, and they are referred to an exercise physiologist. The exercise physiologist evaluates the patient s overall health and then creates a customized exercise program for that individual. [Pg.239]

The mechanism of the Fiesselmann reaction between methylthioglycolate and a,P-acetylenic esters proceeds via consecutive base-catalyzed 1,4-conjugate addition reactions to form thioacetal Enolate formation, as a result of treatment with a stronger base, causes a Dieckmann condensation to occur providing ketone 8. Elimination of methylthioglycolate and tautomerization driven by aromaticity provides the 3-hydroxy thiophene dicarboxylate 9. [Pg.185]

The use of drugs as a form of medical treatment in the United States is an enormously complex process. Individuals can purchase medications through numerous outlets. Over-the-counter (OTC) medications can be purchased in pharmacies, grocery stores, supermarkets, convenience stores, via the Internet, and through any number of additional outlets. OTCs are widely used by all age groups. Prescriptions can be purchased through... [Pg.3]

Due to its flash point of 105°C (221°F), HD and its vapors may explode if exposed to fire or munition detonation. As a form of calibration, a downwind evacuation from a 55-gallon spill should be a minimum of 2.1 miles.2 See Table 3.3 for a summary of the symptoms of exposure and potential medical treatment options. [Pg.79]

Journal reports by Bell and Gershon indicated that tetrahydroaminoacridine (THA), a cholinesterase inhibitor, was effective in reversing delirium induced by Ditran (JB-329) as a form of psychiatric treatment It is interesting that their use of Ditran for this purpose was similar to the atropine coma treatment method reported more than a decade earlier by Forrer, Miller et al. In our study, five subjects were given 5.0 mcg/kg of oral BZ on two occasions, 8-14 days apart 60 mcg/kg of THA was administered iv four hours after the time of the second BZ dose. We observed definite partial reversal of impairment soon after injection, but it was brief. An unexpected observation was the general tendency by the subjects to become impaired more rapidly and intensely by BZ on the second occasion - a finding that was later confirmed in a more careful study. [Pg.284]

Lavoisier may have been cavalier with his treatment of priority issues, but he went far beyond replicating the results of others. To Priestley, oxygen was always going to be regarded as a form of common air modified by the removal of phlogiston Scheele too saw things very much in these terms. Lavoisier came to understand that... [Pg.31]

Detoxification] should be considered successful if safe and comfortable withdrawal has been achieved, whether or not this is followed by a permanent state of abstinence. The ultimate achievement of abstinence, if that should happen, should be regarded as a bonus... detoxification should therefore be regarded as very different from other forms of treatment, and possibly should not even be considered to be a form of treatment. [Pg.8]

It seems that, in its most widely used forms at any rate, the AOM involves such severe approximations and draws on empirical information to such an extent that it cannot be regarded as a proper implementation of quantum mechanics. Nevertheless, as a form of ligand field theory, it possesses distinct advantages and leads to a novel parameterization scheme which promises some degree of transferability of parameters with a metal-ligand bond. This last feature is entirely lacking, at least outside cubic symmetry, in crystal or ordinary ligand field treatments. [Pg.225]

The bipyridylium compounds have also been Used experimentally to desiccate sugarcane leaves, and are more effective for this purpose than substituted phenols, oils, and chlorates. The yield of treated cane remained more or less constant for several weeks, and then increased again as new leaves formed. The yield of sucrose decreased as a result of treatment, partly because of the temporary reduction of photosynthesis, and partly as a result of increased stalk-moisture.800... [Pg.423]
