Arsine oxide complexes

The [NdL4(C104)2]C104 complex has both ionic and bound perchlorate [218]. With L = triphenyl arsine oxide the complex types formed are [215] Ln(NCS)3L3, Ln(N03)3L2 Et0H, Ln(N03)3L3, Ln(NC>3)3L4. Triphenyl arsine oxide complexes appear to be stronger than the phosphine oxide based on the higher dipole moment of arsine. 

The few known arsine oxide complexes are very similar in behavior to the corresponding phosphine oxide analogues. The only structurally characterized examples of this class are UCI4 (Et3AsO)2 and UBr4(Ph3AsO)2 both are trans octahedral.

A similar quantitative treatment of sulphoxides as hydrogen bonding acceptors has been obtained by comparing the IR frequency shift AvOH of the C—I bond in an acetylenic iodide such as IC=CI (Avc j) due to formation of a C—T complex with phenol in various bases. This investigation suggests that sulphoxides belong to the same family as carbonyls, phosphine oxides, arsine oxides and their derivatives90. 

Ph3PO)2NiBr2 is very nearly regular. Arsine oxides form similar complexes (106).

Most of the early reports of phosphine or arsine complexes are erroneous, the products being phosphine oxide or arsine oxide compounds.

Numerous nickel(II) complexes with a variety of phosphine and arsine oxides have been reported, but only a few X-ray crystal structures have been determined. In some cases the structures assigned to the complexes are not completely certain.1800 A selection of nickel(II) complexes is reported in Table 86. 

Unlike the tertiary phosphine and arsine oxides which form a variety of nickel complexes with peculiar properties, tertiary arsine sulfides and, particularly, tertiary phosphine sulfides...
