No heteroarsoles were mentioned in the first edition of Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry (CHEC-I). A review on arsenic heterocycles exists but is somewhat out of date. 1,3,2-Benzothiazaarsolium and 1,3,2-benzodithiaarsolium ions are included in an article on heavier element analogues of carbenes <96AG90l). Two reviews deal with cycloaddition reactions of diazaar-soles <86PS(26)203, 91UK317>. 

A large number of arsenic heterocycles and a more limited number of antimony and bismuth heterocycles containing a second heteroatom (As, P, N, O, S) have been described... 

A number of phosphorus and arsenic heterocycles can also be prepared from these and related germolidines (see also Chapters 1.17 and 1.18).

SYNTHESIS OF SIX-MEMBERED ARSENIC HETEROCYCLES WITH AT LEAST TWO HETEROATOMS... 

For all these reasons, the chemistry of six-membered arsenic heterocycles with more than one arsenic atom is mainly restricted to oxa-, dioxa-, and aza-phospharsinanes and diarsinanes. Since the detection of a highly active arsenolipid, the so-called octadecylphosphoarsenocholin D-21805, as an anticancer compound by the German company Asta Medica, one may expect a renaissance in organoarsenic chemistry, more than 80 years after the discovery of salvarsan. This development certainly will advance heterocyclic arsenic chemistry also.

Cycloaddition chemistry plays an important role in the synthesis of the arsenic heterocycles below (Figure 3) <74TL203, 81TL4713>. As such, their syntheses are detailed in the appropriate reactivity sections (see Sections 2.16.5.6 and 2.16.5.7). 

Arsenic heterocycles display interesting elimination pathways on thermolysis and in their mass spectra. As such, there has been interest <88JA23io> in the use of arsoles <91CB2453>, arsolenes <90JOM(396)C8>, and arsolanes <90PS(48)157> in the preparation of semiconductor films by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD).
