String arrays, matrices

Almost every field in structure s is a matrix. The only exception is the cell array spec names, containing the strings of the species names. Structures are Matlab arrays with named "data containers" called fields. The fields of a structure can contain any kind of data. For example, one field might contain a text string representing a name, another might contain a scalar representing a billing amount, a third might hold a matrix of medical test results, and so on. It is obvious from the last chapter that much of the work of any implementation of the Hartree-Fock method consists of operations with matrices which are stored in a computer as (usually contiguous) strings of numbers. However, it is organisationally convenient to distinguish between a matrix (or a vector) and a string or array of numbers, since this distinction affects the way in which matrices are stored and manipulated. 

Data types treated by MADCAP include real numbers (no distinction is made between floating-point and integer), complex numbers, character strings, matrices with real elements, sets of natural numbers, and arrays of arbitrary elements (77). Notation and facilities exist for character-string manipulation matrix operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, inversion, and transposition set-theoretic operations of complementation, union, intersection, subtraction, and symmetric subtraction (exclusive or). When the set-theoretic operations were added to the language, set-theoretic comparators for use in conditional expressions and other language extensions to facilitate the programming of combinatorial calculations were incorporated, as well (78).
