Lignite can be carbonized in the absence of air, the products obtained being coke, tar, gas, and water (water of decomposition) from the low-temperature carbonization process [1]. In 1965, the FRG produced 1.3 million t tar this way, from which some 50,000 t carburettor fuel and about 400,000 t diesel fuel were obtained [1].
