Spirit of Ammonia, Aromatic

Ammonium salts of weak acids are readily decomposed into the acid and ammonia. Ammonium carbonate [(NH3)2co3 h2oj is a colorless-to-white crystalline solid commonly known as smelling salts. In a water solution it is sometimes called aromatic spirits of ammonia . Ammonia also reacts with Lewis acids (electron acceptors) such as sulfur dioxide or sulfur trioxide or boron trifluoride219. 

Aromatic Spirit of Ammonia. Take of carbonate of atmnouia, 8 ounces avoirdupois strong liquor of ammonia (.882)... 

Take 4 drachms each powdered opium, gum kino, and ctw hincal 3 drachms each camphor and cloves and 4 drachms aromatic spirits of ammonia. Macerate in 4 pints dilute alcohol. Express and filter. 

Compound Tincture of Kino. This is made in the same way as other tinctures (see JS O. 35), with tho following ingredients 1 drachm each powdered opium, kmo, and cochineal U draenms each camphor and cloves 1 fluid ounce aromatic spirit of ammonia. aud 1 pint alcohol. 

Chloroform Elixir. Take li ounces each chloroform, tincture of opium, tincture of camphor, and aromatic spirit of ammonia 20 flrops oil of cinnamon, and 2 ounces brandy. This is an excellent mixture for colic. Dose, i fluid drachm. 

Black Draught. Infusion of senna, 10 drachms sulphate of magnesia, 3 drachms syrup of ginger, 1 drachm aromatic spirit of ammonia, 20 drops. 

Goddard s Diarrhea Remedy. Dr. Paul Goddard gives the following remedy Take ounce tincture of catechu, 2 drachma each tincture of opium and tincture of camphor, and I drachm aromatic spirits of ammonia. 40 drops every hour will afford speedy relief. 

Dick s Cvire for Dyspepsia. Mix together i ounce bicarbunato of soda 2 drachms aromatic spirits of ammonia C drachms compound tincture of gentian 6 drachms tincture of henbane 2 drachms tincture of ngcr 3 drops creosote ounce ginger syrup, and 3 ounces water. A tabic-spoonful token after each meal will causo a cedy cure. 

Aromatic Spirit of Ammonia, B.P.C. A mixture of ammonium bicarbonate and ammonia with volatile oils in diluted alcohol. 

Irritant vapours, to be inhaled, have an analeptic effect in fainting, especially if it is psychogenic, e.g. aromatic solution of ammonia (Sal Volatile). No doubt they sometimes recall the exorbitant and deserting spirits to their proper stations. ...

Spirit of Ammonia, Aromatic. Spirit of hartshorn, aromatic. A soln contg 34 g ammonium carbonate, 90 ml 10% ammonia water, 10 ml lemon oil, 1 ml oil of lavender, I ml oil of myristica, 700 ml alcohol and a sufficient quantity of water to make 1 liter. Absolute ale by vol, about 66%.
