Argon arc welding

The metal is isolated commercially by a complex chemical process, the final stage of which is the hydrogen reduction of ammonium ruthenium chloride, which yields a powder. The powder is consolidated by powder metallurgy techniques or by argon-arc welding. 

Titanium stabilised fillers should not be used in argon-arc welding as titanium will be vaporised and its effectiveness as a stabiliser lost. Carburising the weld seam by pick-up from surface contamination, electrode coatings or the arc atmosphere leads to increased tendency to intercrystalline corrosion.

The distribution of impurities between the main phases of the alloys was studied, since it affects the susceptibility of material to hot cracking during welding and the mechanical properties of welded joints. Metallographic analysis and chemical analysis were carried out with the help of JSM-U3 electron microscope, which had an attachment for energy-dispersive x-ray analysis. In this process the arc is struck between a non-consumable tungsten electrode and the workpiece. The tungsten electrode is held in a special gun through which argon gas flows to shield the electrode and molten metal from atmospheric contamination - the process is often referred to as TIG or argon arc welding.
