Compounds can be broken down to their component elements. For example, when you pour a solution of the compound hydrogen peroxide, HjOj, over a cut, an enzyme in your blood decomposes it to produce oxygen gas. 0 as evidenced ty the bubbling that takes place. It is this oxygen at high concentrations at the site of injury that kills off microorganisms. A similar enzyme is found in baker s yeast.

Wear safety glasses, and remove all combustibles, such as paper towels, from the area. Keep your fingers well away from the flame because it will glow more brightly as it is exposed to the oxygen. 

Pour the yeast into the glass. Add a couple of capfuls of the hydrogen peroxide and watch the o -gen bubbles form.
