Archetypal symbolism

The shaman is able to act as an intermediary between the society and the supernatural, or to put it in Jungian terms, he is an intermediary to the collective unconscious. Through the office of the shaman, the society at large is brought into close and frequent encounter with the numinous archetypal symbols of the collective unconscious. These symbols retain their numinosity, immediacy, and reality for the society through their constant reaffirmation in shamanic ritual and through the shaman s epic narration of mythical scenarios and his artistic production. I thought about Jung s statement that the alchemists projected their unconscious contents into matter. I realized that this is only partially right. I saw that they consciously, purposively, projected chosen archetypal images into matter, including the matter of their own physical body. While the work of Carl Jung and others have underscored the archetypal power and universal significance of alchemical symbols, alchemy itself is much more than a psychological commentary on the nature of the human psyche. The consistency of these themes suggests that the entities associated with the belladonna alkaloids are primordial earth-forces (always symbolically female) which have been brutally and systematically repressed in human consciousness for literally thousands of years. A goddess repressed is a woman scorned, and her archetype appears in the collective psyche as a dangerous and destructive entity out to revenge herself on the patriarchy that usurped her power. [Pg.121]
