Archetypal symbolism

The shaman is able to act as an intermediary between the society and the supernatural, or to put it in Jungian terms, he is an intermediary to the collective unconscious. Through the office of the shaman, the society at large is brought into close and frequent encounter with the numinous archetypal symbols of the collective unconscious. These symbols retain their numinosity, immediacy, and reality for the society through their constant reaffirmation in shamanic ritual and through the shaman s epic narration of mythical scenarios and his artistic production. The shaman does more. 

I thought about Jung s statement that the alchemists projected their unconscious contents into matter. I realized that this is only partially right. I saw that they consciously, purposively, projected chosen archetypal images into matter, including the matter of their own physical body. The alchemical artist, through an act of imaginal perception, structures archetypal symbols, such as the alchemical furnace, or retort, into matter. 

Symbolism of the familiar concerns the routine of everyday life. Everyday foods of correct appearance eaten at normal mealtimes represent secnrity. An incorrectly or uimaturally coloured food arouses suspicion and is unsettling. Archetypal symbolism is the symbolism of psychologists. It is that which may lie in the subconscious part of our personality, for example, red and yellow colours are called warm, blue and green cold.

The Bearers attitude to the world, therefore, is essentially one of submission in the service of others. Much of their potential energy is consequently suppressed. While the work of Carl Jung and others have underscored the archetypal power and universal significance of alchemical symbols, alchemy itself is much more than a psychological commentary on the nature of the human psyche. It is true that alchemy reflects the highest aspirations of the human soul, for our gold has always symbolized the hastened perfection of Man as well as matter. However, any alchemist worth his salt knows that lasting transformation only takes place when the work is accomplished on all levels of reality—the mental, the spiritual, and the physical. The Great Work is actual work to be done with the hands, the heart, and the soul, and not just understood with the mind.

The consistency of these themes suggests that the entities associated with the belladonna alkaloids are primordial earth-forces (always symbolically female) which have been brutally and systematically repressed in human consciousness for literally thousands of years. A goddess repressed is a woman scorned, and her archetype appears in the collective psyche as a dangerous and destructive entity out to revenge herself on the patriarchy that usurped her power.
