World production ia the late 1990s of both natural and synthetic forms of vitamin E is estimated at 22,000 metric tons and growth is expected to keep pace with increasing need. The 1993 U.S. production was 14,096 metric tons (47) with an additional 1080 metric tons from imports. The principal U.S. producers of the natural form are Eastman Chemical Company, Archer Daniels Midland Company, and Henkel, and of synthetic vitamin E, Hoffmaim-La Roche and BASE. International producers include Hoffmaim-La Roche, BASE, Eisai, and Rhc ne-Poulenc.

Once mycelia have been separated via continuous filtration from exhausted production media, citric acid may be recovered by using three different methods, such as direct crystallization upon concentration of the filtered liquor, precipitation as calcium citrate tetrahydrate, or liquid extraction. Since molasses are extremely rich in impurities, direct crystallization cannot be applied unless very refined raw materials, such as sucrose syrups or crystals, are used. The precipitation process (that is based on subsequent addition of sulfuric acid and lime to clarified fermentation broths) is used by the great majority of world citric acid manufacturers, including Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM) in the United States. Liquid extraction with mixtures of trilaurylamine, n-octanol, and Cio or Cn isoparaffin was used by Pfizer Inc. in Europe and Bayer Co. (formerly Haarmann Reimer Co., subsidiary of Miles) in the Dayton (OH, USA) and Eikhart (IN, USA) plants only (Moresi and Parente, 1999), even if such plants might have been shut down in 1998. 

In addition to the use of ethanol in cars and trucks, the chemicals industry, faced with daunting increases in petrochemicals costs, has a new appetite for bioethanol. In fact, bioethanol can be used to create plastics—an area that consumes vast quantities of oil in America and around the globe. Archer Daniels Midland is constructing a plant in Clinton, Iowa that will product 50,000 tons of plastic per year through the use of biotechnology to convert com into polymers.
