Aqueous micellar solutions of many nonionic surfactants, with an increase in temperature, become turbid over a narrow temperature range, which is referred to as their cloud-point [17,277]. Above the cloud-point temperature, such solutions separate into two isotropic phases. Cloud-point extraction (CPE) is also referred to as a particular case of ATPE [278,279] and more specifically as aqueous micellar two-phase systems [10,277]. Very recently, in an extensive review, Quina and Hinze [280] have discussed in detail the emergence of CPE as an environmentally benign separation process, highlighting the basic features, experimental protocols, recent applications, and future trends in this area. [Pg.166]

It is to be hoped that future calculations will attempt to predict the diffusion coefficients of solutes in narrow pores. Measurements in such systems are extremely difficult to carry out and recent experiments in an admittedly broad pore (a 2 mm diameter capillary) are therefore of particular interest. Liukkonen and co-workers [61] found that the diffusion coefficient of NaCl in a dilute aqueous solution was 75% greater at the walls of this capillary than in the bulk solution, a result in line with the phenomenon of "surface conductivity [62]. Yet this finding clearly runs counter to the trend in the self-diffusion calculations in much narrower pores. It rather looks at this stage as if electrolytes near polar walls behave quite differently from non-electrolytes. [Pg.89]

The application spectrum of DHBCs is extended into a wide range of nanomedicine and nanotechnology oriented fields. Considering, the increasing interest for water compatible systems, further increase of DHBCs utilization in emerging technological applications is expected. The outstanding aqueous solution properties of DHBCs have already started to be utilized in a number of applications and these trends will be enhanced in the future. [Pg.322]
