Application method bonding

Synthesis of heterocycles by forming C—X bonds by radical reactions is not a generally applicable method, and seems not to be useful for making small rings. However, the attack of thiol radicals on double bonds can be a practical synthetic route, such as in the conversion of 1-hexene-7-thiol to thiepane (Section 5.17.3.3.1).

Methods can be based on some preconceived concept of bonding, with ionic and covalent extremes, or on pattern recognition based on the periodic table. Miscellaneous methods of limited applicability link bond strength with other physical properties. The a priori calculation of heats of formation by wave mechanics is possible in theory. In practice, the most widely applied method incorporates experimental data to derive atom or bond parameters which can then be used for calculations on closely related compounds. 

Glycopeptides contain many functional groups of different reactivity as well as O- and /V-glycosidic bonds. Therefore, the compatibility and chemoselectivity of the applied reactions is a fundamental prerequisite in glycopeptide synthesis. In this chapter, efficient and generally applicable methods and their combinations will be illustrated by examples [5,8,91.

Films. Both structural and nonstructural adhesives are commonly available in film form. Adhesives applied in the form of dry films offer a clean, hazard-free operation with minimum waste and excellent control of film thickness. However, the method is generally limited to parts with flat surfaces or simple curves. Optimum bond strength requires curing under heat and pressure, which may involve considerable equipment and floor space, particularly for large parts. Film material cost is high in comparison to liquids, but waste or material loss is the lowest of any application method. 

Ozonization is a widely applicable method for scission of carbon-carbon double bonds. 

The most generally applicable method of forming the transition- and inner transition-metal 7t-cyclopentadienyl bond involves the reaction of Na[Cp] with the appropriate anhydrous metal halide or complex halide in an ethereal solvent such as THF or glyme under a dry, inert atmosphere. The complexes are usually isolated by evaporation of the solvent and extraction into an aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent. Purification is achieved by crystallization or sublimation. 

Most of the commonly applicable methods for activating the carboxy group of Fmoc amino acids to form amide bonds in solid-phase synthesis have been explored. Generally speaking, most methods are suitable but, in practice, relatively few methods are routinely used especially when scale-up of Fmoc/tBu solid-phase procedures are of prime consideration.
