Appendix Macrocycle Formation

The medical and pharmacological interest in macrolides spearheaded important efforts in synthetic methodology, including aldol, hydroboration, epoxida-tion, and allylation methodology, as discussed in later chapters. Another weighty problem in need of a solution that surfaced was the means by which to effect ring closure of seco acids to the corresponding macrolides [33]. 

B To sum up, much of life can be understood in rational terms expressed in the language of chemistry. It is an international language, a language for all time, a language that explains where we came from, what we are, and where the physical world will allow us to go. (Kornberg, 1989) [2]
