1 Antithesis of Achiral and Chiral Open-Chain Target Molecules 

Each transform should lead to reagents, which are more easily accessible than the target molecule. In the subsequent steps of antithesis the reagents are defined as new target molecules, and the transform procedure is repeated until the reagents needed are identical with commercially available starting materials. 

The following terms are used to specify the type of transform in the subsequent discussions of antitheses  

In later sections of this chapter we shall concentrate on the stereochemistry of target molecules, although the functional group chemistry will, of course, remain the basis of all synthetic operations. In this section we shall analyze synthetic functional group chemistry in two ways  

Both items are repeated until the intermediates are reasonably priced commercial starting materials. The resulting antithetic schemes are then evaluated and the most promising ones can be converted into synthetic plans and be investigated in the laboratory.
