Antilipidemic agents

Nicotinic acid is an antilipidemic agent that effectively reduces serum concentrations of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides, and increases concentrations of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. It has been suggested that the marked lowering of serum cholesterol seen during treatment of dyslipidemia with nicotinic acid results from hepatotoxi-city (1).

Antilipidemic Agents. The administration of clofibrate leads to a significant decrease in serum alkaline phosphatase both in hyperlipidemic and in normolipidemic patients (F5, S8, W18). Isoenzyme analysis shows that this change is entirely attributable to a reduction in the circulating liver enzyme (W18). 

Falls in serum alkaline phosphatase have also been reported with nafenopin (D17) and chlorophenoxyisobutyrate (HIO). In contrast, colestipol therapy given over many months results in a significant rise in serum alkaline phosphatase (M15). It has been suggested that some of the effects of antilipidemic agents may be related to their action on vitamin D absorption (G25).
