Agents anticlotting

Homocystinuria Usually a failure of cystathionine synthase (Fig. 40-2 reaction 6). Rarely associated with aberrant vitamin B12 metabolism (Fig. 40-2) Thromboembolic diathesis, marfanoid habitus, ectopia lentis. Mental retardation is frequent. Diet low in methionine Vitamin B6 in pyridoxine-responsive syndromes Vitamin B12 in responsive syndromes Anticlotting agents... [Pg.668]

Metabolism is almost always an oxidative process. Reductive metabolism is much more limited. Functional groups that are reduced are, naturally, in a higher oxidation state. The more common examples include nitro groups, which are reduced to amines, and ketones, which reduce to alcohols. Chloramphenicol (8.28), an antibiotic that has fallen out of favor because of serious side effects, contains a nitro group that is reduced to the corresponding amine (8.29) (Scheme 8.9).7 Warfarin (Coumadin, 8.30), an anticlotting agent, is at least partially metabolized by reduction of its ketone to an alcohol. [Pg.191]

Aspirin acts by interfering with the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are connected to the causes of inflammation and fever. In particular it is an inhibitor of the cyclo-oxygenase (Cox-2) enzyme. Studies of the use of aspirin as an anticlotting agent suggest that half an aspirin tablet per day may reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in some people.3... [Pg.208]

Nowadays, such vectors and cultured animal cells are preferred for large-scale production of therapeutic proteins such as tissue plasminogen activator (an anticlotting agent) and erythropoietin, a hormone that stimulates production of red blood cells. I... [Pg.676]

Coumarin was previously used as an anticlotting agent and as a flavor for tobacco, butter, and medicines. Today, it is used as a deodorizing and odor-enhancing agent, in perfumery and soap. Presently, the use of coumarin in food and feed products is prohibited by the Food and Drug Administration. [Pg.248]

The properties and uses of coumarin and dicoumarol are very dissimilar. Today, coumarin is not used as an anticlotting agent, whereas the primary use of dicoumarol is for this purpose. [Pg.248]
