Dreams animals

All three conditions—darkness, mental obliteration, and somatic annihilation—are associated with the states induced by poppy extract, as well as those associated with natural sleep. So, too, are inspired transports of dreams. Coleridge and many of his romanticist brethren used opium to enhance the hyperassociative visionary processes that fed their poetry. Just as Nyx (the nocturnal poppy dispenser) begat Hypnos (sleep), Hypnos begat Morpheus (human dreams), Icelus (animal dreams), and Phantaseus (inanimate dreams, whatever they might be ). 

In terms of the important scientific use to which we could put animal sleep in the study of human dreaming, it makes little difference what the answer to the question about animal dreams might be. All we need know, in order to learn from our animal colleagues, is that they have the same kind of brain activation in their sleep as we do. We then go on to make the fairly safe assumption that animals have the same mechanisms of brain activation in sleep as we do. 

Immunization has been the dream of the traditional Chinese medicine. In modem tiuKs, in the lack of time for active immunization, passive immunization with immimoglobulins has solved many urgent problems. Active immunization has prevented infectious mass diseases, such as diphtheria, hepatitis, influenza, measles, meningococcal, mumps, pneumococcal, poho, rabies, mbella, tetanus, typhus, varicella, and yellow fever, as well as several diseases of domesticated animals. 

The first is that the activity of chemically specific cell groups correlates more strongly than any other brain measure with REM sleep vs. waking neurophysiology in animals (and hence, by implication, with dreaming vs. waking consciousness in humans). 

Now Schenck, Mahowald, and others tell us that not only does SSRI treatment potentiate eye movements in NREM sleep, but that it may also potentiate dream enactment in REM sleep. In other words, SSRIs may induce the REM sleep behavior disorder How does this work In addition to releasing the saccade generator from inhibition, the drug appears to interfere with the spinal cord inhibitory mechanism that normally blocks the central motor commands that so convincingly animate our dreams but do not result in real behavior. 

Of course, there is an important difference between LSD and dream hallucinations LSD images are often kaleidoscopic, whereas dream images are formed and scenario-like. And even though LSD causes an arrest of serotonin neuronal discharge, it does not enhance REM sleep. On the contrary, it promotes arousal both in humans and in animals, perhaps via the dopamine enhancement that links LSD to schizophrenia. 

In my case, none of these uninvited image people promised salvation. They didn t even reveal scientific secrets. But they did, by their presence, make one thing clear that sleep deprivation alone can open wide the Doors of Perception that Huxley celebrated. Had I prepared my mind for specific communications from the beyond, I have no doubt that my visionary visitors would have articulated whatever words I wanted to hear. The point is that you don t need a drug, you don t need a medium, and you certainly don t need a spirit world to have them. Those exotic ginger flowers and that tumultuous ski run spoke so clearly to the shade of Aldous Huxley You are wrong about dreams. They can be both pre-ternaturally colorful and ecstatically animated. Even without mescaline or LSD, and certainly without cocaine, a drug that will almost certainly counteract psychedelic dreaming. 

The Jivaro warrior is able to benefit from the appearance in his Yage dream of these spirit forms because of a whole background of mythological and cultural beliefs. When he meets the spirits, the "Old Ones," he is not surprised or horrified, as we might be, for he is familiar from childhood with the spirit mythology. The tribe has two mythic ancestors both are warriors, who give advice in matters of war. Most of the other spirits take the form of animal demons, mainly of three categories. 

The second category of animal demons includes the Giant Snake, the great mythical water monster, "pangi," whose symbolism extends far beyond the realm of the Jivaro Yage dream. 

The other group of dream animals met under Yage are the jungle birds, which are large birds of prey. 

From such experimental evidence one may infer that in animals, and possibly in man, LSD-25 in l°w doses leads to an arousal state that can last for several hours. In view of the more recent information about paradoxical sleep, a somewhat different conclusion may be justified. An "arousal" pattern in the EEG does not necessarily signal the onset of arousal, but may just as well indicate the phase of paradoxical sleep. This suggests that in dream sleep, or REM sleep, the cerebral cortex is physiologically in a state similar to that...
