AndroGel

Testosterone gel (Androgel) is applied once daily (preferably in the morning) to clean, dry, intact skin of die shoulders and upper arms or abdomen. After die packet is opened, die contents are squeezed into die palm of die hand and immediately applied to the application sites. The application sites are allowed to dry before die patient gets dressed. The gel is not applied to die genitals.

For optimal absorption of testosterone from AndroGel, it appears reasonable to wait 5 to 6 hours after application prior to showering or swimming. Showering or swimming after just 1 hour should have a minimal effect on the amount absorbed if done infrequently. Do not wash the sites of application for at least 2 hours after application of Testim. 

Measure serum testosterone levels 14 days after initiation of therapy to ensure proper dosing. If the serum testosterone concentration is below the normal range, or if the desired clinical response is not achieved, the dose may be increased from 5 to 7.5 g AndroGel) or 10 g Testim) and from 7.5 to 10 g AndroGel), as instructed by the physician.

Of 123 men who used AndroGel 1% for periods up to 42 months, 12 had some local skin irritation, but only one discontinued treatment as a result (113).

Testosterone gel 1% formulation (Androgel) is applied in much larger doses—5 or 10 g each day—to the skin of the shoulders, upper arms, or abdomen. The hormone is absorbed quickly, within 30 minutes, but it may take several hours for complete absorption of the dose. For this reason, the patient should be reminded to wait at least 5 to 6 hours after application before showering. To prevent inadvertent transfer of testosterone gel to others, the patient should thoroughly wash his hands with soap and water after administration of a dose.
