Recently, Chiang et al. produced microtrenches on substrates and studied the molecular stacking of triphenylene discotic molecules on the substrate [193]. They demonstrated that the discotic molecules in the trenches can assemble into uniaxially aligned columns (Fig. 7.14). The way in which the discotic molecules anchor on the walls of trenches and the over all orientation of the columns are determined by the energetic conditions of the walls.
