Several modem analytical instruments are powerful tools for the characterisation of end groups. Molecular spectroscopic techniques are commonly employed for this purpose. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS), often in combination, can be used to elucidate the end group structures for many polymer systems more traditional chemical methods, such as titration, are still in wide use, but employed more for specific applications, for example, determining acid end group levels. Nowadays, NMR spectroscopy is usually the first technique employed, providing the polymer system is soluble in organic solvents, as quantification of the levels of... [Pg.172]

Despite its inherent analytical difficulties, gas chromatography on capillary columns in combination with sensitive and specific mass spectrometry has been widely used for separation of these analytes. Typical examples of such applications are those interfacing gas chromatography with mass spectrometry via electron impact (470, 484, 480, 489), chemical ionization (481, 478, 483, 473), or both interfaces (474, 475, 487, 488). Apart from mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry has also been suggested as an alternative very useful identification tool in the area of the -agonist analysis. Capillary gas chromatography with Fourier transform infrared spectrometry was successfully employed to monitor clenbuterol, mabuterol, and salbutamol residues in bovine liver and urine (471). [Pg.1086]

Selected topics in Fourier-Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry instrumentation are discussed in depth, and numerous analytical application examples are given. In particular, optimization ofthe single-cell FTMS design and some of its analytical applications, like pulsed-valve Cl and CID, static SIMS, and ion clustering reactions are described. Magnet requirements and the software used in advanced FTICR mass spectrometers are considered. Implementation and advantages of an external differentially-pumped ion source for LD, GC/MS, liquid SIMS, FAB and LC/MS are discussed in detail, and an attempt is made to anticipate future developments in FTMS instrumentation. [Pg.81]
