We have considered the strengths and weakness of each method. The most important lesson we have (hopefully) learned is that no single method is right for all situations. Depending upon the nature of the application and the data we have to work with, any one of the 4 techniques might outperform the others. Fortunately, with the availablity of various software packages together with inexpensive computers on which to run them, it is a relatively easy matter to try them all on our data so that we may choose the method which best meets each situation. 

The BioView sensor includes a software package (CAMO ASA, Norway) for data analysis and on-Une estimation of different bioprocess variables simultaneously. Thus, the instrument is able to predict the trends of the concentration courses of different variables during a cultivation and is used to give information about important process steps (e.g., feeding time, harvesting time, etc.). The instrument is able to monitor on-line several fluorophores in situ and non-invasively during cultivation processes and permits an estimation of different bioprocess variables simultaneously. The increasing of cell mass concentration and the product formation as well as the actual metabolic state of the cells is simultaneously detectable by this fluorescence technique.

Thermodynamic software packages may be used to find equilibrium compositions at prescribed temperatures and pressures. Such calculations require knowledge of feed components and products and their thermodynamic properties and are based on Gibbs free energy minimization techniques. Examples of thermodynamic packages may be found in Smith and Missen (Chemical Reaction Equilibrium Analysis Theory and Algorithms, Wiley, 1982) and in Walas (Phase Equilibria in Chemical Engineering, Butterworths, 1985). 

Band fitting (curve fitting, or band shape analysis) is conveniently performed with commercially available software packages which fit, interactively or automatically, Gaussian or Lorentzian line shapes (or their combinations) to an unknown band profile. The applicability of this technique to lignin chemistry is not known at present. 

Although a number of software packages of this types are available to facilitate analysis of these types of data, most of the software requires the kineticist to provide initial estimates of parameter values. The technique of "curve peeling" is widely used for this purpose, and also provides an initial evaluation of data quality. 

Besides comparing how well a family of molecules overlaps with a reference molecule, there are sophisticated software packages that determine the phy.sictxrhcmical parameters located at specific distances from the surface of the molecule.
