Ammonium nitrate chemical incompatibilities

When it is mixed with potassium nitrite in the melted state (440°C), ammonium nitrate detonates. The presence of rust decreases the temperature of the explosion to 80-120°C. This behaviour is linked to the chemical incompatibility of the nitrite ion and ammonium ion. [Pg.169]

COPPER (7440-50-8) Cu The powder forms the friction-, heat-, or shock-sensitive explosive detonator, copper acetylide, with acetylene gas acetylenic compounds and ethylene oxides. The powder forms explosive materials with azides (e.g., sodium azide forms potentially explosive copper azide). Finely divided material forms friction-, heat-, or shock-sensitive explosive with powdered divided bromates, chlorates, and iodates of barimn, calcimn, magnesium, potassium, sodium, or zinc. Violent reaction, possibly explosive, when finely dispersed powder comes in contact with strong oxidizers ammonium nitrate alkynes, bromine vapor, calcium carbide, chlorine, ethylene oxide, hydrazine mononitrate, hydrogen peroxide, hydrogen sulfide, finely divided bromates, iodine, lead azide, potassium peroxide, sodium peroxide (incandescence), sulfuric acid. Incompatible with acids, anhydrous ammonia chemically active metals such as potassium, sodium, magnesium, and zinc, zirconium, strong bases. [Pg.278]

BICHROMATE of POTASH (7778-50-9). Noncombustible, but many chemical reactions can cause fire and explosions. A powerful oxidizer. Violent reaction with many substances, including combustible materials, reducing agents, organic materials, finely divided metals, ammonium nitrate, ammonium perchlorate, fluorine, hydrazine, hydrazinium nitrate, hydrox-ylamine, iron powder, nitric acid, potassium iodide, sodium borohydride, sodium bromide, sodium tetraborate and its decahydrate, tungsten and zirconium dusts. CALCIUM NITRATE (10124-37-5) A strong oxidizer. Violent reaction with reducing materials. Forms shock-sensitive mixtures with organic contaminants. Incompatible with combustible materials (wood, cloth, oil, grease, etc.), organics, and other easily oxidizable materials, chemically active metals, aluminum nitrate, ammonium nitrate, cyanides, esters, phosphorus, sodium hypophosphate, thyocyanates.
