Ammonia manufacture coal gasification

When completed in 1996, the Weihe plant will gasify 1500 t/day of coal to produce 300,000 t/yr of ammonia, which will be used to manufacture 520,000 t/yr of urea fertilizer. This project is the eighth Texaco oil or coal gasification plant Hcensed by Chinese industry.

The reprecipitated free sulfur is separated from the filtrate, and the residual solution, containing cyanides and thiocyanates, is treated with a suspension of calcium hydroxide. The precipitated calcium cyanide and calcium thiocyanate are filtered and added to the coal used in gas manufacturing. During gasification the cyanogen compounds are converted to hydrogen sulfide and ammonia. The advantage of this rather complicated process is that the only end products of gas purification are elemental sulfur and ammonia. 

Common names for mixtures of CO/H2 are derived from their origin such as water gas (CO + H20) from steam gasification of coal and crack gas (CO + 3H ) from the steam reforming of methane, or from their application such as methanol synthesis gas (CO + 2H2) for the manufacture of methanol and oxo gas (CO + H2) for hydroformylation reactions. Another synthesis gas is ammonia synthesis gas (N2 + 3H2) which does not contain CO as a higher constituent.
