Historically, the amide linkages in proteins are also known as peptide linkages. Depending on the number of peptide links per molecule or degree of polymerization and molar mass, a distinction is made between the actual proteins with molar masses above 10 000 g/mol and the polypeptides with molar masses below about 10 000 g/mol. In contrast to polypeptides and proteins, poly(a-amino acids) are not copolymers, but homopolymers. [Pg.524]
