American Wire Gage

Conductor or wire sizes are expressed in terms of the American Wire Gage (AWC) system. In this system, the ratio of any wire diameter to the next smaller gage or diameter is 1.123. The AWC sizes range from 40 to 0000. Table 2-37 lists the AWG number, wire dimension, and resistance for solid copper wire. Wires larger than 0000 (as well as smaller wires) are stranded to maintain flexibility.

Conductors and cables are marked by the manufacturer to show the maximum voltage and American Wire Gage size, the type letter of the insulation, and the manufacturer s name or trademark. Insulation is often color coded. 

Size for size, the direct current resistance of the most common aluminum conductor is fix>m approximately 1.6 to 2.0 times lACS. For equivalent direct current resistance, an aluminum wire that is two American Wire Gage sizes larger than copper wire must be used. Nevertheless, as a result of the lower specific gravity, the conductivity-based ahimiiium required weighs only about half as much as an equivalent copper conductor.
