The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association was founded in 1925. However, at the time, most American speech therapists were interested in communication disorders that dealt with aphasia, articulation, and fluency there was little interest in disorders of the voice and larynx. In the late 1930 s and early 1940 s, the Nazi regime forced many European phoniatricians and voice experts to emigrate to the United States. These emigrants initiated U.S. interest in voice pathology, which became a more prominent field of study in the 1980 s. [Pg.1726]
