Amalgams conductivity

Recently it has been shown that the oxides of the platinum metals can have a higher corrosion resistance than the metals themselves , and have sufficient conductivity to be used as coatings for anodes, e.g. with titanium cores. Anodes with a coating of ruthenium dioxide are being developed for use in mercury cells for the electrolysis of brine to produce chlorine , since they are resistant to attack if in contact with the sodium-mercury amalgam. [Pg.939]

Most sulphones are known to react with chemical reducing reagents like dissolved metals or amalgams. However, electron transfers may be produced also directly from metallic or conducting carbon cathodes maintained at a certain potential depending on the desired reducing power. We will discuss the reactivity of sulphones towards electrons issued from cathodes, especially in the light of recent results. [Pg.1002]

Mercury forms alloys, called amalgams, with other metals such as gold, silver, zinc, and cadmium. It is not soluble in water, but will dissolve in nitric acid. It has a high electric conductivity, making it useful in the electronics industry. However, unlike most other metals, it is a poor conductor of heat. Because of its high surface tension, it does not wet the surfaces that it touches. This characteristic also accounts for its breakup into tiny droplets when poured over a surface. If spilled, it should not be collected with bare hands, but with a thin piece of cardboard to scoop it up. [Pg.169]

The development of new transducing materials for DNA analysis is a key issue in the current research efforts in electrochemical-based DNA analytical devices. The use of platinum, gold, indiiun-tin oxide, copper solid amalgam, mercury and other continuous conducting metal substrates has been reported [6]. However, this chapter is focused on carbon-based materials and their properties for immobihzing DNA by simple adsorption procedures. [Pg.4]

B. N-t-Butylhydroxylamine. Caution Since hydrogen may he liberated during the reduction with aluminum amalgam, the reaction should he conducted in a hood. Also, the aluminum amalgam may he pyrophoric. Consequently, it should he used, immediately and not allowed to become dry. [Pg.40]

The starting material Re2(CO)10 may be purchased either from Strem or from Pressure Chemicals. The reactions are conducted in Schlenk tubes under a dry argon or nitrogen atmosphere. Sodium amalgam is prepared by addition of sodium metal (0.3 g) to 3mL of mercury under nitrogen. [Pg.107]

The ore or mineral, when extracts d from the mine, is first subjected to a grinding or triturating process in a machine resembling in its action, and operation the common millstone, and driven by a water-wheal. When thus redueod to powder, it is carried off by a, stream of water to the amalgamating mills, represented in Fig. 2251 Whilst hold in suspension in the water, it is conducted first to the upper mill by the spout A, from... [Pg.276]

Newman and co-workers conducted a careful product analysis after reduction of 1,2-epoxydecane with sodium amalgam in aqueous "+ -a... [Pg.96]

Desulfonylation of a-sulfonylacetates. Desulfonylation of these substrates is not satisfactory by the usual methods (Zn-HOAc, Raney Ni-C,H5OH, sodium amalgam), but can be conducted in 70-75% yield with sodium-ethanol in THF (modified Bouveault-Blanc reduction). The substrates (2) are obtained by Wolff rearrangement of a-acyl-a-benzyl-sulfonyldiazomethanes (1).1... [Pg.241]
