Am/Eu separation factors

The effect of radiolysis on the extraction of Am(III) and Eu(III) by Ph2PS2H and (ClPh)2PS2H in a mixture with TBP in toluene was negligible up to a total dose of 0.1 MGy. At higher levels, such as 0.7 MGy, DAm decreased slightly, whereas DEu clearly increased, resulting in a significant drop in Am/Eu separation factors (61). 

Moore (1961) examined the effect of 12 diluents plus mixtures of xylene-chloroform on Am/Eu separation factors for the extraction of these metal ions by 20% triisooc-tylamine from 11.9M LiCl/0.1 M HCl solutions (table 8). The highest Am/Eu separation factors are observed in those systems in which the diluent is most inert . Hexone, which possesses an available oxygen-donor atom, slightly reduces the separation factor. The aliphatic chlorinated diluents reduce them by approximately a factor... 

The work of Musikas on the use of di-thio-substituted HDEHP as an extractant indicates possible significant Am/Eu separation factors when TBP is also present. However, Preiser (1988) disputes these results as being due to HDEHP contamination. Other researchers have considered thio-alkyl phosphate diesters for lanthanide extraction, but they offer only reduced extraction for the lanthanides (Inoue et al. 1989, Kondo etal. 1990).
