Aluminum chromate coated

Kendig MW Buchheit RG, Corrosion inhibition of aluminum and aluminum alloys by soluble chromates, chromate coatings, and chromate-free coatings, Corrosion, 2003, 59, 379-400. [Pg.705]

The barrier action of a chromate coating increases with its thickness. Chromate conversion coatings can be used as a base for paint or alone for corrosion protection. Previously it was described how the leached hexavalent chromium acts as an anodic inhibitor, by forming passive films over defects in the coating. Since the films formed on aluminum by the chromic acid-phosphoric acid process contain no hexavalent chromium, they do not provide self-healing from defects. [Pg.359]

Chromate coatings are applied to aluminum, cadmium, copper, iron, magnesium, silver, zinc, and their alloys. The corrosion film is the result of the following three properties ... [Pg.90]

Chromate coatings can be produced on aluminum and its alloys, magnesium, cadmium, and zinc. They offer good protection and improve the adhesion of the organic layer [22-26]. The corrosion resistance provided by chromate is based on the following three properties [27] ... [Pg.688]

Corrosion resistance. Chromate coatings are mostly applied on aluminum components, particularly on aircraft components and on aluminum objects which are to be coated with paints. They are beneficial in marine environments. Chromium coatings provide an non-porous bond for all paints. [Pg.418]

A coating consisting of a compound of the surface metal, produced by chemical or electrochemical treatments of the metal. Examples include chromate coatings on zinc, cadmium, magnesium, and aluminum, and oxide and phosphate coatings on steel. See also chromate treatment and phosphating. [Pg.475]

Chromate coatings were first introduced in the early 1950s and are now widely accqited by the aliuninum-finishing industry for such applications as domestic appliances, small parts, aircraft and electronic equipment and continuous coil coating of architectural aluminum. The films provide excellent paint adhesion and superior painted and unpainted corrosion resis-... [Pg.208]

Chromium Chromate. Chromium chromate treatment baths are acidic and made up from sources of hexavalent chromium and complex fluoride, fluorosiHcate, fluorozirconate, fluorotitanate, and siHcofluorides. Optional additional components added to accelerate coating rate are free fluoride, ferricyanide, and other metal salts such as barium nitrate. Conversion coating on aluminum precedes by the following reactions (2,3,17) ... [Pg.224]

Operation nd Control. Control of chromium chromate conversion coating baths is accompHshed by controlling chromium concentration and pH. The quaHty of the conversion coating is sensitive to aluminum accumulations in the coating bath as well as to rinse water purity. Sulfate contamination is a particular problem. [Pg.224]
