Alternative antifungal agents

Alternatively, N-hyroxypyridine-2-thione, a versatile antibacterial and antifungal agent commercially available as Omadine, has been used. As expected, in the presence of DNA its photolysis causes SSBs (via OH), but after its photolytic consumption continuing photolysis at 350 nm caused the photooxidation of G in DNA and in dGuo (Adam et al. 1999). Apparently this effect is induced by one of its photolytic products that are largely the N,AT-dioxide, the mono-N-oxide, the disulfide and the sulfonic acid (Adam et al. 1999). 

This important antifungal drug (see Chapter 48 Antifungal Agents) is an alternative therapy for visceral leishmaniasis, especially in parts of India with high-level resistance to sodium stibogluconate, but its use is limited in developing countries by difficulty of administration, cost, and toxicity. 

Itraconazole is an orally active, broad-spectrum antifungal agent that has become an important alternative to kettK ona-zole. An acidic environment is requited for optimum solubi-lizoitinn and oral absorption of itraconazole. Drugs such as H2-hi.staminc antagonists and antacid.s, which reduce stomach acidity, reduce its gastrointestinal absorption. Food...
