While a number of dendritic catalysts have been described, catalyst recyclization in most cases is an unsolved problem. Diaminopropyl-type dendrimers bearing Pd-phosphine complexes have been retained by ultra- or nanofiltration membranes, and the constructs have been used as catalysts for allylic substitution in a continuously operating chemzyme membrane reactor (CMR) (Brinkmann, 1999). Retention rates were found to be higher than 99.9%, resulting in a sixfold increase in the total turnover number (TTN) for the Pd catalyst. [Pg.529]

For example, POPAM dendrimers of 1,3-diaminopropane type have been used in membrane reactors as supports for palladium-phosphine complexes serving as catalysts for allylic substitution in a continuously operated chemical membrane reactor. Recently, Majoral et al. described the synthesis of a third-generation phosphorus-containing dendrimer possessing 24 chiral iminophosphine end groups derived from (2S)-2-amino-l-(diphenylphosphinyl)-3-methylbutane (Fig. 11) [32]. The dendritic catalyst was tested in allylic substitution reactions, using rac-(.E)-diphenyl-2-propenyl acetate or pivalate as substrates. The observed enantioselectivities were good to excellent (max. 95% ee) in all reactions. For some of them, the use of membrane reactors for their recovery or application in continuously operated reactors has been demonstrated. Examples include the use of dendrimer-bound nickel catalysts for the Kharasch addition [54, 59] and dendritic palladium catalysts for an allylic substitution [73, 60]. The membrane reactor concept has also been transferred to reactions at higher pressure, as shown for the hydrovinylation of styrene (cf. Section 3.3.3) [75]. Modem ultra-and nanofiltration membranes allow an effective recovery of the homogeneously soluble catalyst.
