The synthesis and olefin metathesis activity in protic solvents of a phosphine-free ruthenium alkylidene bound to a hydrophilic solid support have been reported. This heterogeneous catalyst promotes relatively efficient ring-closing and cross-metathesis reactions in both methanol and water.200 The catalyst-catalyzed cross-metathesis of allyl alcohol in D20 gave 80% HOCH2CH=CHCH2OH. [Pg.83]

Whereas these solid catalysts tolerate water to some extent, or even use aqueous H2O2 as the oxidant, the use of homogeneous Ti catalysts in epoxi-dation reactions often demands strictly anhydrous conditions. The homogeneous catalysts are often titanium alkoxides, possibly in combination with chiral modifiers, as in the Sharpless asymmetric epoxidation of allylic alcohols (15). Photo-oxidation of citronellol in polystyrene beads [120]. A sample of 3.0 g of polystyrene beads (commercial, cross-polymerized with 1% of divinylbenzene) was treated with a solution of 2 mg of tetraphenylporphyrin and 780 mg (5 mmol) of citronellol in 20 mL of ethyl acetate in a petri-dish (30 cm diameter). After 2h in a ventilated hood, the solvent has evaporated and the petri-dish was covered with a glass plate and irradiated for 5 h with a 150 W halogen lamp. The solid support was then washed with 3 x 20 mL of ethanol, the combined ethanol fractions were rota-evaporated and 900 mg of the hydroperoxide mixture (96%) was isolated as a slightly yellow oil. The hydroperoxides were quantitatively reduced to the corresponding allylic alcohols by treatment with sodium sulfite. One of these products is used in the industrial synthesis of rose oxide. [Pg.384]

The procedure is commendable for its sinq>licity, reduced toxicity (chromium in all its oxidation states is carcinogenic) and achieves good yields of ketones from alcohol, for example, octan-2-ol is oxidized into octan-2-one (92%), cyclohexanol into cyclohexanone (90%) and menthol into menthone (98%). Pyridinium chromate is also a well-known oxidant for allylic oxidations. As a silica gel supported reagent, this is turned into an efficient alcohol oxidant that will leave acid-labile functions unscathed. Another advantage of the reagent is the long shelf-life of more than a year. These solid-supported oxidants also greatly facilitate pr uct work-up, when compared with their solution counterparts. [Pg.845]

Supported copper-based catalysts are active for a great variety of reactions and there have been many fundamental studies of their catalytic and solid state properties. Among them, the oxidation of hydrocarbons and CO (1), alkanes (2) and alcohols (3) dehydrogenation, hydrogenation of ketones (4), allyl alcohols and a- and 6-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones (5), alcohol amination (6), low temperature water gas shift (7). methanol synthesis (8), oxidative condensation of methanol (9), hydrolysis of acrylonitrile to acrylamide (10), and removal of NOx pollutants (11). [Pg.444]

The first step consisted of the Mitsunobu etherification of an allyl alcohol with the resorcinol monoester, which afforded 102. Cleavage of the benzoyl protecting group released the phenol, which was then attached to the solid support. One-step cleavage of the THP group and bromination was achieved with PPhs/C Br4 to furnish 103. Nucleophilic substitution of the bromide with benzylamine was followed by acylation of the secondary amine wtith N-Boc-allylglycine 104, which resulted in the precursor 105, ready for the metathesis reaction this was performed with catalyst 101 to yield the final product 106.
